I haven’t done a lot of cold weather hiking, but I think I’d totally go for some hot chai tea as a hiking refreshment from time to time. How about you? New National Park design in the works! Joshua Tree was first established as a National Monument in 1936 to protect the unusual desert tree growing there but it’s history goes back much farther: The area was inhabited first by people of the Pinto Culture, thousands of years ago, and then by the Serrano, Cahuilla, and Chemehuevi peoples. Beginning in the later 1800’s, white settlers used the area for cattle ranching and mining. In 1994, the national monument was upgraded to become a National Park, which now encompasses an area larger than the state of Rhode Island, protecting parts of the Mojave and California Deserts, and of course the iconic Joshua Trees. When I lived in San Diego, I got to explore Joshua Tree a few times, and it always felt like visiting another world. The rocky landscape is lots of fun to navigate, and there’s a haunting mystery to the trees; it felt like I was wandering around in a different age and there was no telling what I might discover around the next boulder. Keep an eye out for this sticker, coming soon! (I’ve also got a restock of the National Parks Checklist Map on the way, and the Trail Journals should be done printing any day!)

New Sticker! “Going to the mountains is going home.” -John Muir This often-quoted line appears in the first paragraph of Muir’s book, ‘Our National Parks’ published in 1901. It resonates with me, even though I’ve never lived in a particularly mountainous area. When I am in the mountains, I feel like my soul comes alive in a way I can’t really explain. But “home” seems to be the best approximation that English can afford. How about you?
